STATEMENT FROM MIPS ABI GROUP PRESIDENT ON HP/SCO ANNOUNCEMENT
San Francisco, CA - February 14, 1996 - "We commend Hewlett-Packard and the Santa Cruz Operation on their efforts to achieve unity among UNIX vendors and, in doing so, furthering the growth of UNIX technology" said Heinz Diehl, President and CEO of the MIPS ABI Group, Inc., the world's third largest UNIX market. "We believe that it is critical for members of the UNIX community to work together to continue the development and evolution of this powerful operating system."
"The announcement from HP and SCO on a next-generation UNIX is in the same spirit of our organization's efforts over the past six years to achieve UNIX systems compatibility. Today, these efforts have resulted in support for hundreds of applications, written to a common operating system standard for MIPS microprocessor-based UNIX systems at the binary application level. Furthermore, we have supported other industry efforts to encourage UNIX unification, such as the Large File Summit and UNIX 95."
"In an effort to advance standardization in the industry, NEC and the MIPS ABI Group, Inc. are announcing the establishment of the Golden Gate Operation, a MIPS ABI UNIX joint development laboratory to be located at NEC in San Jose. Supported by our members, the Golden Gate Operation will foster communication and joint development between the MIPS ABI Group companies and others including HP and SCO as we jointly work to develop the next generation of UNIX operating systems."
"Our companies, our software developer partners and our customers all have significant investments in UNIX technology. It is up to us as leaders of this industry to work together to ensure that their future needs and requirements are met."
